First Day of Great Fast for the Eastern Church; Ash Wedneday on Feb 17

Season of the Great Fast (a.k.a. Great Lent / Lent)

FASTING:

In the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Metropolia of Pittsburgh: The first day of Great Fast, Clean Monday, February 15, is a day of strict fast. No animal meats and products such as milk and eggs. [Traditionally, strict fasting also excludes using oil in foods and wine/alcohol – this is optional in our Metropolia]. Health factors are to be considered. If one is on a special medical diet or medication or pregnant or a small child, observance of the fast may be mitigated. If you have concerns or questions, speak to the pastor.

Wednesdays and Fridays of the Great Fast are days of simple fast, on which no flesh-meat may be eaten.

[For those who are observing the stricter traditional form of fasting on weekdays, there is a mitigation of fasting on Saturdays and Sundays, allowing the use of wine, oil and fish. / A fasting day begins at midnight (for example, if a Friday, Friday fasting begins at midnight and ends at the midnight hour which begins Saturday.)

OTHER WORKS: In addition to fasting, other works, such as almsgiving (charitable works) and increased prayer are also in keeping with the Great Fast observance.

LITURGY OF THE PRE-SANCTIFIED: During Great Fast: The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified is scheduled for all Wednesdays (at 12 noon) and Fridays (7:00pm) here at St. Basil's.
